Beginning Gardeners begin
We spent a fantastic 3 hours in the garden on Saturday:) First things first, we decided to go with Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew (www.squarefootgardening.com). It looks way do-able and we can create it in phases so that we can be successful pretty quickly without having everything planned out from the get go. This may work for you as well if you have a small space or are already container gardening as it is very similar.
So we assembled our first 4'x4' box and while I measured and leveled, Mike started to shore up the rabbit fencing, replacing the bamboo stakes with 3/4" wood stakes. It is so much more sturdy now AND we saw a rabbit scoping out the premises...so good thing:) My job was the box, but I forgot a level which was a big bummer; however, lucky for smart phones, I was able to download a level app and it worked like a charm.
Next thing up to do is amend the soil. All the websites agree that 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite and 1/3 compost is the magic mix...we shall see. I know the box looks lonely right now, but eventually there will be 4- 4'x4' boxes and a 2' strip bed along the north border. We are going to put plants in the ground this Saturday and I hope you are too! Let me know and/or email pictures of your own progress :)
